Artist Of The Week - Anchor & Braille

It's been about three years since we've gotten an album from Anchor & Braille, the indie side project of Anberlin's Stephen Christian, but this week, on July 31st, the band's sophomore album will be released. The Quiet Life is a collection of haunting melodies and catchy percussion, certainly a maturation of sound since 2009's Felt. The Quiet Life is available now in stores and online through Tooth & Nail Records.

A Plea for Purging is excited to announce their first tour of the new year on which they'll be joined by co-headliners Shai Hulud.

As a long time fan of Shai Hulud, I am honored to share the stage with them on our upcoming, co-headlining tour with them. I'm sure I will lose my mind every night. They are legendary. We both are very lucky to have Counterparts and Dead Icons come out and support this tour. Both bands are killer and will be a great fit to this run. - Andy Atkins

The Hope Within Hatred tour, supported by Counterparts and Dead Icons, kicks off February 23 in Danbury, CT and wraps up March 18 in Evansville, IN.
See below for full tour dates.

Plea has also just released a live video for "The Life", a song from their 2011 release The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging. The band explains how the video came about:

While on last year's "The Life and Tour of A Plea for Purging" we had a chance to hangout with our good friend, Mark Eshleman of Reel Bear Media, whom we have worked with in the past on "The Eternal Female." With one camera and an ecstatic Dayton, OH crowd, Mark shot some footage that would become a live video for "The Life."  We are very happy with the way it turned out and owe it all to Mark and his neat camera.

Check out the live video for "The Life" here: http://www.youtube.com/user/FacedownRecords

The Life & Death Of A Plea For Purging

Artist: A Plea For Purging
Album: The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging
Release Date: November 8, 2011
Label: Facedown Records

The A Plea For Purging boys are back at it again with their new album, The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging. I was shocked to find out that Plea was releasing an album so (seemingly) soon, after their last masterpiece, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and it seems like only yesterday that it was released. How would The Life and Death stack up with such a short space of time in between? Could they top their last effort, or would they suffer masterpiece hangover?

The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging kicks off quickly with a creative, 8-bit sounding guitar and drum part, that is simply perfect. After the tasty 8-bit intro, the heaviness comes in and kicks you down. The first track, "the life," has powerful lyrics that hit me immediately. They tackle an important issue in a Christian's life: forgetting who got you this far by allowing yourself to get caught up in the rat race. "music city" also moved me. I could feel Andy Atkins' love and homesick emptiness he feels towards his home of Nashville while he's away on tour. A thought not lost on me when considering what these people do to entertain us. The song also features a pretty unique shout-out to fellow hometown bands as well.

Maybe it's just me, but I hope not. The lyrics featured in The Life and Death are heavy, powerful, and meaningful. Even if you're only a few tracks in, it feels like Plea's most important work. "heart of a child," which features an amazing vocal appearance from Chad Ruhlig (of Legend/ex-For The Fallen Dreams), definitely brings Matthew 18 to mind. It's almost an anthem for us to hold tightly to the childlike mentality and innocence that Jesus spoke of. Towards the middle of the album however, things slow down a bit, and we have "skin & bones." It has a slowed down, somber mood, and the singing is handed off to guitarist Blake Martin. He can never sing enough for my tastes, and thankfully we get a few more glimpses of it on this album. I do think an exception on the album's deepness is "room for the dead." I say this because it is a little weak, lyrically speaking. It's also an anomaly because it's a great song. I know it's a strange thought, but it's true. Regardless of my feelings about the lyrics, it flows so well.

Overall: The Life and Death of A Plea For Purging answers my questions poised earlier. Does it stack up to The Marriage of Heaven and Hell? It's better. A tough feat, but they accomplished it. Masterpiece hangover? Not at all. This is a complete record with a ton of bang for the buck. With an astounding 14 tracks that clock in at around 53 minutes long, you can't go wrong. Pick this up.

We are proud to announce the re-signing of A Plea For Purging to Facedown Records!

A Plea For Purging came to Facedown Records in 2007 with a reputation for fire-breathing and amazing technical ability. The band has since released three albums, the most recent being 2010's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, a terrifyingly honest look at the age old wolf-in-sheep's-clothing theme and an auditory thrill. Now the band is looking toward releasing the follow up to The Marriage with Facedown Records in late 2011.

Label head Jason Dunn says "It's been a privilege to work alongside of the Plea guys, both as a band and as individuals for the past 4 years and I am honored to be able to extend that working relationship. Plea have grown with every album so I am very excited to see where this next album takes them."

A Plea for Purging will be heading into Random Awesome studio in August to record with Josh Schroeder.

Andy Atkins, front man for Plea had this to say about the band's decision to re-sign:

Though we are still a very small band, 4 years ago when we were absolutely nothing, Facedown and the Dunn family believed in us enough to invest their time and money into us. We were some n00bs from Tennessee that thought we knew everything but really knew nothing. With Facedown's backing, we have been able to travel the world and meet tons of great people through our music. They have always supported us and given us complete artistic freedom. With that being said, it only seems right to continue on with the supportive team we have behind us. We are proud to continue working from within the Facedown Family.

Haste The Day's Farewell Tour with Mychildren Mybride, The Chariot and A Plea For Purging
March 4th, 2011 at The Lost Horizon, Syracuse, NY

It was rather shocking when Haste The Day announced that they would be disbanding this past November, after a farewell tour in late winter/early spring. Starting at the end of January, the bands on the tour have been trekking all throughout the states and Canada on the tour, going through bad weather the whole way, and on Friday, March 4th, the Farewell Tour stopped in Syracuse, New York, at The Lost Horizon. After seeing both Haste The Day and Mychildren Mybride last year there, I was familiar with the smaller venue, and looked forward to a killer show.

After a good (two and a half hour) drive to The Lost Horizon, I finally arrived, about 20 minutes before the show was set to start. When I walked in, I heard what was a local band on their last song, with rapid double-bass and high, shrieking screams. Meanwhile, I realized that the venue had been renovated since I had been there going on a year ago, adding in a section of restaurant-like booths, that were located right next to the merch area, allowing for fans to hang out with the bands. I also noticed that among the band merch tables that were there, The Chariot was not one of them. I then talked to Robert from Mychildren Mybride, and found out that the axle on The Chariot's trailer had broken, and that they were still up in Canada, but had left about 20 minutes prior and were planning on making the show, but nothing was guaranteed. Soon after, A Plea For Purging took the stage.

This was technically my first time seeing A Plea For Purging, but I did catch the end of their set at Purple Door Festival this past summer, playing "Malevolence." The first thing that I took notice of were how heavy A Plea For Purging were. Their bass player John Wand had his bass up loud enough that it shook up the venue, and certainly my bones. They played a set of mainly songs from The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, such as "And Weep" and "The Fall," but closed with "Malevolence," off Depravity. They also incorporated a question and answer segment into their set, towards the end. The only downfall of the set, was that guitarist Blake Martin's clean vocals were barely audible on "The Fall," due to being drowned out by his heavy riffs and frontman Andy Atkins' growls. Nevertheless, they put on a good set.

At this point in the show, I was unsure of what was going to happen, as The Chariot were scheduled to play this slot of the tour, after A Plea For Purging and before Mychildren Mybride, but the band were not there. A few minutes later though, Mychildren Mybride started setting up, and I wondered if The Chariot would still make it. Soon after though, the opening sounds of McMb's "Terra Firma" started to swell, before finally bursting into a breakdown. The band then tore into one of their most noticeable songs from Unbreakable, "On Wings of Integrity," and then went onto "Crimson Grim." Lead vocalist Matt Hasting then at one point walked past the stage and onto the crowd, who remarkably held him up. He then said "This one's for all the metalheads out there," and then the opening riffs of "Faithless" became evident. The rest of their set was solid as well, playing more from their debut album on the second half of their nine songs, but included "Hooligans," before ending with "Verses" and "Headshot!," on which Hasting encouraged 50 stage dives, which was accomplished within the song. This was my third time seeing Mychildren Mybride, and I can honestly say that they are getting better each time, and put on a good show.

A good half an hour or more followed after Mychildren Mybride's set, allowing for many to hang out with the bands, and the wait paid off. Halfway through the wait, I was informed that The Chariot had indeed made it and would be playing for sure. Vocalist of The Chariot, Josh Scogin, stepped onto the stage, and proclaimed "This set is brought to you by the letters M.C.M.B.," as the band ended up using McMb's gear to play, because they left their trailer with their equipment up in Canada to make it to the show. Scogin then shouted out the name of the song they were about to open with, but I didn't catch it. As the first note was played, both Scogin, and bassist Jon "Wolf" Kindler immediately jumped into the crowd. It was amazing to watch them play with such energy and crazy antics, such as Kindler going through the crowd to a near-barren corner of the standing area and playing there on his own for a little while, and later, even dropping his bass into the crowd right in front of the stage. Another highlight of their set was when they played "The City," which was started with a slow screaming of "This is only a revolt," from the song's chorus, and then moved into the "rant" that is made up of the last half of the song, which was truly memorable to watch. The band also played another new one, "Calvin Makenzie," complete with the sampled '50s' country song bit about the band's home town, which they continued to let play even after the song was over. The Chariot lived up to their well-known live show for sure, and you really have to see them live to appreciate them, even if you are a fan of their recordings.

After a bit of a break, and time that I spent hanging out with some of A Plea For Purging and their merch guy, Haste The Day finally took their spot on stage and started with their usual opener, "68" from Dreamer, then ripped into the ferocious "The Place Where Most Deny." The classic "Blue 42" was played next, and had everyone screaming along to the song's main line, "burning bridges!". The band's great melodies were showcased on "The Minor Prophets," then "Mad Man." Front man Stephen Keech then asked the crowd to vote between them playing "Fallen" or "Walk On." To me, it sounded like nearly everyone voted for "Fallen," but they played "Walk On." A similar thing happened later, when asked to vote between the newer "Dog Like Vultures" or "Travesty," in which "Travesty" was chosen, over "Dog Like Vultures." The band played one of their bigger songs from Pressure The Hinges, "Stitches," another one that everyone sang along to, and then Stephen said, "This one's a slower one for the older people here to sway along to," before playing a favorite of mine of their latest Attack of the Wolf King, "White As Snow." Keech then went on to talk about the band's faith, and about Christians out there that don't love, and instead hate others, and that Haste The Day do not believe in that, but in the love that comes from Jesus Christ, and a lifestyle of loving others.

Right after, they played another classic, "American Love," which showed off some great harmonies between bassist Mike Murphy, Keech, and guitarist Scotty Whelan. After playing "Needles," they "closed" with "My Name Is Darkness," which was followed by a crowd chant of "One more song, one more song!" They came back out a minute after, and encored with "Chorus of Angels," on which Scotty Whelan's backup clean vocals were shown off, reaching a great range. The strong "When Everything Falls" was chosen to end on, and was quite a fitting way to end their set, and the last time I will ever see them live most likely.

With only this week left on their Farewell Tour, I would highly recommend you see Haste The Day, and their tour mates, if they are in your area, as it is one of the best shows I've been to in a while. Truly a memorable experience.

Christian Rock Rocks recently interviewed A Plea For Purging vocalist Andy Atkins about their new album, titled The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell.

Christian Rock Rocks (Brooks Ginnan): So you have a new album releasing this week titled The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell. Could you explain about the release and the process of making the album?
Andy Atkins (A Plea For Purging): Well, Plea has been an ever evolving entity since it's inception, growing not only musically but as five men in life. Our influences as musicians has changed many times as our interests in genres have changed. Lyrically speaking, the band has matured with content as we have in our own personal lives. The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell is the product of trial and error. It is the product of the world around us.

CRR: I've seen you asked the origin behind the album title numerous times, so I'll ask instead, what inspired the theme of the album?
Andy: When beginning the writing of this record, we were in an angry spot. We were brought down by the world around us and the things we were seeing. We wrote this record to speak our minds about the marketing of our God. It's something we needed to get off our chests. It's very freeing to be honest with yourself and others.

CRR: What are some of your favorite songs off the record?
Andy: Lyrically speaking, I love "Trembling Hands." It, to me, encompasses what the whole record is trying to get across. Musically speaking, I love jamming "Sick Silent America."

CRR: What was it like to include some clean vocals and a ballad from Blake on TMOHAH?
Andy: Blake's just trying to get famous with his pretty voice. This record is really just his tryout to land a spot in a band as the vocalist, hahaha. We are amped for the new addition of singing in our band. It's just something new for us. We have always been a band that has respected melody. We are just approaching it from a different aspect now.

CRR: How does APFP grow in God while on tour?
Andy: To be honest, we are all in a spot right now where we aren't looking for influence in our walks with God. We are personally searching Him out in our own ways without the diluting of His word through mis-interpretation and opinion. I did in fact fall asleep last night to a few of the dudes having an intriguing conversation about theology though.

CRR: What are your summer touring plans?
Andy: Scream The Prayer, if it doesn't kill us.

CRR: Any other things you would like to say?
Andy: I am listening to that band Cage The Elephant while I'm doing this interview. They jam hard.

The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell

Artist: A Plea For Purging
Album: The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Release Date: 7/6/10
Label: Facedown Records

In 2009, A Plea For Purging released Depravity. It was one of my favorite albums of the year. Depravity was a concept album about the wickedness that exists in the heart of man. Musically, it had everything a metalhead would want to hear, ripping guitar solos, crushing breakdowns, relentless drumming and extremely heavy guitar riffs. Fast forward less than a year and a half later and A Plea For Purging are set to release their follow-up album, The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell.

The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell is another concept album of sorts, but this time around is focused on the teachers, preachers and prophets that lead the church astray with false doctrine. Lyrically, A Plea For Purging let these false teachers know that God is none too pleased with their actions and that His judgement awaits. This message is actually the very last words you hear in the closer "The New Born Wonder" before the album ends. "The day is near when everyone will stand before their Maker/Trust not in man/Trust in God/Your judgement is coming." This is a very heavy subject matter to say at the least. What adds an even more chilling atmosphere is the fact that it is spoken by a rather creepy sounding young girl.

Musically, A Plea For Purging create quite an ominous atmosphere to go along with their nearly deathcore styled heaviness. They utilize electronic effects, samples and vocal manipulation effects to help add to the eerie feel of the songs. I do have one small complaint about the album, which is the lack of guitar solos. This is one of the elements A Plea For Purging do so well and are known for. With the exception of a rather disjointed one in "Golden Barriers," the album is completely devoid of them. However, this is just a minor complaint. In all honesty, with the tone of the album, they probably wouldn't have fit in well anyway.

One aspect that A Plea For Purging have never used before, but are present in abundance, are clean vocals. Thankfully, Blake nails them. He sounds great in contrast to Andy's growls. Another surprise from the band is the complete clean singing in the ballad, "The Jealous Wings." There is not a scream to be heard. The atmosphere of The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, along with the vocals and melody, have an almost progressive metal sound to them. I can almost just picture Extol writing this for their album The Blueprint Dives.

Rating: 9/10 As much as I loved their prior album Depravity, I believe that The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell is an improvement. This is a crushingly heavy album.Thankfully, in place of monotonous breakdowns, the band utilize electronics and samples to create an almost industrial music style effort. This effect adds a depth that makes the breakdowns stand out, and more than make up for the lack of guitar solos. A Plea For Purging had a great formula before, but the experimenting shows to only improve it.
