Artist Of The Week - Anchor & Braille

It's been about three years since we've gotten an album from Anchor & Braille, the indie side project of Anberlin's Stephen Christian, but this week, on July 31st, the band's sophomore album will be released. The Quiet Life is a collection of haunting melodies and catchy percussion, certainly a maturation of sound since 2009's Felt. The Quiet Life is available now in stores and online through Tooth & Nail Records.

Premiere: Abel, “Fire Walk With Me”

NEW YORK ROCK BAND ABEL DEBUT NEW SONG FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM “MAKE IT RIGHT”

June 26, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA – Poughkeepsie rock group Abel have premiered the first new track, “Fire Walk With Me,” from their forthcoming album, Make It Right, which is scheduled for release on September 18.  The track is streaming now, exclusively at Altpress.com: http://bit.ly/MPHQL4

Formed by four close friends with a passion for creating honest art, Abel released their first full-length, Lesser Men, in late 2010 to over 14,000 downloads and an aggressive touring schedule.  “The band was really thriving,” vocalist Kevin Kneifel explains, “but I watched a lot of close relationships break down that year—it was a difficult time for all of us and our loved ones.”

Recorded with producer Matt Malpass (Manchester Orchestra, Lydia, Copeland), Make It Right showcases a darker and more pragmatic Abel than their previous effort with brooding riffs and honest lyrics that cut to the core.  From the aggressive bite of the opening track, “I’ll Be Waiting”, to the faith-stretching questions in the closing measures, Make It Right is an indie-rock diary, achieving moments of real musical honesty.

“It’s about coming to terms with failures and unfulfilled expectations,” Kneifel continues, “I think that’s a really universal feeling, and I hope that people who hear these songs will be reminded that they’re not alone—and that those times can challenge us to become better people.”

Make It Right will be available on September 18 through iTunes, Amazon, and all digital retailers. To track the band’s progress, map out tour dates, or just say hello, visit abeltheband.com or facebook.com/abeltheband.

Artist: Abel
Album: Lesser Men
Release Date: 10/19/10
Label: Come&Live!

I was first introduced to Abel last year, when they released their debut EP, titled The Honest Love. I was genuinely impressed with their calming, worshipful indie rock. Now, a bit over a year later, they are back with their first full length effort, Lesser Men. They take everything done well on The Honest Love, and take it up a notch, with more of an edge to their indie rock, that gives it a fuller sound. Lyrically, Lesser Men talks of God's never ending love for us and those searching for that Love. Take "Saints" for example, a plea that proclaims, "If only we could be a children of love."

One of the most impressive songs off of Lesser Men, would be the title track, which is filled with driving guitars and honest, anthem-like lyrics of the song. The following songs, "Titanic" and "Take Me Home," are much more stripped down and calming, the latter being filled with mainly just an acoustic sound. "Standing Still" may be one of the most accessible songs on the record, with the standout line "I just want to be loved." The album closes with "Atlantic," which is split into two songs, "The Broken Hearted King" and "The Voice In The Tides." The first of the two has more of an upbeat sound, full of the well crafted guitar work placed throughout Lesser Men, and flows into the second part of the closer, which is much more of a calmer indie sound, to end the record on a calming note.

Rating: 8/10 Abel bring us a great album in Lesser Men, their debut full length. Well it may not be the top release of the year in the indie scene, it is certainly one of the best indie rock albums this year has had to offer us.

ABEL SIGNS TO COME AND LIVE AND ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE FOR NEW ALBUM

Former Facedown Records / Dreamt Music artist Abel have signed with Come&Live! to release their upcoming full-length record entitled Lesser Men on October 19, 2010.  The Poughkeepsie, NY natives have spent the last year touring in support of their Facedown debut, The Honest Love, which garnered excellent reviews from the likes of Outburn, HM Magazine, and Indievisionmusic.com--making their upcoming release a highly anticipated sophomore effort.

Come&Live! is a grassroots effort founded by former Tooth & Nail A&R executive Chad Johnson.  The label is a non-profit organization whose goals are to build a community of ministry-focused bands and give away 100% of profits to backyard and global charities.  Lesser Men will be available as a no-strings-attached free download through the label's website, Comeandlive.com beginning October 19th.

“Music is about people, and we believe that Come&Live! really understands that," Abel vocalist Kevin Kneifel explains.  "I think the organization's non-profit 'anti-label' model can be a strange thing to anyone looking in, but we feel that C&L! is the right place for Abel to be--we want to make our music and message available to as many people as we can."
